Open Staff Positions

It requires a committed, professional, well-organized volunteer staff to put on a truly excellent convention. In past years, a few core volunteers would stick around from year to year, but the majority of the planning for each convention was packed into a few short months with a new group of volunteers each year. This meant a real loss of knowledge, experience, and know-how from convention to convention, and this is something we hope to avoid moving forward.

This year, the Executive Board of AvaCon invites the community to join us as year-round planners of the convention. These volunteer staff positions not only provide excellent professional experience, but also the ability to help us shape and continue to transform the convention into the kind of event that Residents want and need.

Though the planning is a lot of work, collaborating with terrific people and helping plan the premier “real life” social event of the Second Life calendar is also a ton of fun!

Track Leaders

See the full position description below and then click here to apply for a track leader position.  Please note that a resume is required and interviews will be conducted in-world.   You will receive more information when your application has been reviewed.

Track leaders are essential personnel and play a crucial role in helping plan, organize, and execute the Second Life Community Convention. In addition to assisting with overall planning and organizing, Track Leaders take responsibility for planning and organizing the programmatic content of the convention by soliciting and reviewing proposals submitted by members of the Second Life community. Track Leaders also work to do outreach and increase attendance at the convention, help find sponsors, and contact communities and groups in-world to encourage them to submit proposals or attend SLCC.

Expectations of Track Leaders

Track Leaders are expected to maintain the highest level of professionalism in all of their activities related to SLCC. As officials of the conference organizing team, they represent the convention not only to our attendees, but also to our partners, sponsors, hotel staff, vendors, and everyone involved in making the Second Life Community Convention successful. Ideally, Track Leaders should have solid prior experience organizing and planning large events, and should be well connected with the community segment (track) they wish to represent.

Duties of Track Leaders

Track Leaders must be prepared to devote a significant amount of time and effort into planning and organizing in the months prior to the convention. At a minimum, Track Leaders should expect to spend at least 5-10 hours per week on SLCC related business in the months leading up to the convention, and be available to meet weekly with conference organizers.  Track Leaders should also encourage people they come into contact with to help financially support the convention through sponsorship.

A key responsibility of Track Leaders is to solicit and invite the very best proposals for presentations from the Second Life community. Track Leaders should be prepared to do outreach work to invite residents to submit proposals and attend the convention in San Francisco, and help publicize the event to in-world communities. In reviewing proposals, Track Leaders should be fair and use good judgment, and look for novel concepts, arguments that are well supported, or examples that are documented.

Track Leaders also must communicate clearly and often with their presenters to ensure that all presenters have the materials, resources, or setup requirements they need to have a successful presentation. In this capacity, Track Leaders may act as liaisons between the conference planning team and presenters, and must ensure that all parties know when and where to present during the convention.

Finally, Track Leaders are expected to arrive at the venue at least one day prior to the start of the convention to help with setup and to get the convention off to a good start, and to be available at the end of the convention for tear down and clean up.

Track Leaders provide an invaluable service to the convention, and in return receive a complimentary conference registration for their contribution, time, and effort.
